Life Before Politics
Murmu breathed her first on the 20th of June 1958. She was born to her parents in Uparbeda, Mayurbhanj, Odisha, India. The name of her father was Biranchi Narayan Tudu. However, her mother’s name remains unknown to us. Her family has a long history in political administration, on the local level. In fact, her father and her grandfather, both served as village heads under the Panchayati Raj System.
As far as her educational background is concerned, nothing much is known to us. We only know that she studied at the Ramadevi Women’s University. After her higher education, she became an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur. At the same time, she also served as a Junior Assistant at the Irrigation department of the Government of Odisha.
Political Career
Murmu’s political career got a kickstart when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP, in 1997. After that, she became an elected councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. Then she also became the chairman of the same Panchayat in 2000. Her rise in political career started as the BJP formed government in Odisha in collaboration with Biju Janata Dal. During the rule of this coalition government, Draupadi Murmu first became the Minister of State with Independent Charge of Commerce and Transportation, in 2000. Then from 2002 to 2004, she served as the Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development.
In 2004, she also became an elected MLA from Rairangpur Assembly Constituency. In addition to all these, she also became the first woman governor of Jharkhand in 2015. In fact, she became the first female tribal leader from Odisha to become a governor. After that, in June 2022, she was declared as NDA’s Presidential candidate. Finally, she took oath as Indian 15th President on the 25th of July 2022.

Draupadi Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu. They also have a daughter named Itishri Murmu. However, Shyam Charan passed away in 2014.
